Building Skills, Confidence, and International Exposure Through The Leadership Labs
Joining The Leadership Labs program in June 2025 became a major turning point in my journey in research, leadership, and innovation. What initially began as a learning opportunity gradually evolved into a platform that transformed my confidence, technical abilities, leadership skills, and perspective on impact-driven work. Through mentorship sessions, collaborative activities, innovation challenges, and research opportunities, I gained valuable experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), teamwork, research communication, and problem-solving while learning how innovation and research can be applied to address real-world environmental and societal challenges.
The mentorship and capacity-building experiences I received through The Leadership Labs opened doors to several international opportunities and professional experiences. I participated remotely in the Climate FXB Program, where I contributed to the design of a water toolkit for communities in Namibia, an experience that strengthened my understanding of climate resilience, sustainability, and community-centered environmental solutions while exposing me to international collaboration and diverse perspectives. I was also selected for the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ) Summer School Internship in the United States. Although I was unable to participate due to visa and logistical constraints, the opportunity itself was a meaningful milestone that reinforced my confidence and growth.
Beyond these opportunities, I also had the privilege of serving as a lead author on a recently completed collaborative research project and gained opportunities to present research at conferences through the initiative. Most importantly, these experiences strengthened my leadership, communication, and collaboration skills while inspiring me to continue pursuing meaningful impact through research, innovation, and mentorship.
