Our Impact
From Mentorship to Graduate School in the United States (Ayomiposi Akinyemi)

Pursuing Environmental Science Research at Columbus State University
Coming to the United States for graduate school has been one of the biggest transitions of my life, and I am grateful that I did not have to navigate it alone. Through The Leadership Labs mentorship program, I received guidance, encouragement, and practical support that helped prepare me for this new chapter. The mentorship extended beyond motivation by providing real tools for academic and professional success. I learned how to identify graduate programs aligned with my goals, write professional cold emails to professors, build a strong academic CV, develop an effective statement of purpose, and prepare confidently for interviews. The program also exposed me to the importance of teamwork, research collaboration, and conference presentations in graduate school and professional development. These experiences provided clarity, direction, and confidence throughout my application journey.

In Spring 2026, I began my Master of Natural Science in Environmental Science program at Columbus State University in the United States. Starting graduate school as an international student from Nigeria has been exciting, challenging, and deeply rewarding. I have had the opportunity to experience a new academic environment, engage with people from diverse backgrounds, and grow both personally and professionally. Serving as a graduate teaching assistant and leading laboratory classes has been especially fulfilling. Beyond the classroom, my first semester involved rigorous research, intensive fieldwork, and the opportunity to present a research poster. Although adjusting to a new country came with challenges, the support and preparation I received through The Leadership Labs made the transition smoother and gave me the confidence to adapt quickly.

During my time at Columbus State University, I hope to focus on research related to the environmental impacts of quarrying and mining activities. As the global demand for renewable energy technologies and battery resources such as lithium continues to rise, mining activities are becoming increasingly important. My goal is to contribute research that helps balance resource extraction with environmental sustainability, particularly in areas related to water resources and ecosystem protection. In the future, I hope to become a professor and mentor the next generation of environmental scientists while continuing to contribute to impactful environmental research. I also look forward to giving back by supporting and volunteering with The Leadership Labs mentorship program to help guide students beginning their own academic and professional journeys.
